My song "Sisters" was initially inspired by my relationship with my own sister. During the life struggles I witnessed her going through, I wished I could take it upon myself to fix it all for her and protect her from the things she was facing... but all I could really do was be a friend and lend an ear and my time, and show support and love. After I began writing the song, I came to understand my lyrics in a more universal way, a way that related to the support relationships between all women whether biological "sisters" or not. Listening, spending time, showing support, and giving love -- those simple things, I came to realize, are so often given to others in need by women, but aren't always as frequently offered to women in their times of need. Women often feel as though they must deal with their struggles themselves, and remain firmly in the roles of "healer", "giver", and "mother". Sometimes a woman needs another woman, or network of women, to reach out actively and allow her to
be the recipient of healing, giving, and mothering. Who better to understand how to support and help women than other women? We are all connected by the shared experiences of womankind, and thus are all made "sisters", unified by universal female experiences, expectations, roles, and identities, whether decided by or for us.
I’ll pick you up and carry you away
Out of the dark
I’ll chase away the demons, keep you safe
‘Til you find your spark again
You and me, expected to be the Healers, the Givers,
The Mothers
Who else can we run to if it isn’t
To one another?
There’s a tie that binds me and you
That no circumstances could undo
And I—I call you “Sister”
You—are never all alone
We—We are all Sisters
And we never have to make it on our own
We were there together lost in the waves
With so much to lose
Trapped inside the clutches of a thousand fates
That were never ours to choose
But side-by-side we lasted the storm
And found ourselves standing on the shore
And I—I call you “Sister”
You—are never all alone
We—We are all Sisters
And we never have to make it on our own
No force can take
No force can break our faith
In our Sisters
I am—you are—never all alone
And I—I call you “Sister”
You—are never all alone
And I—I am
And You—You are
And We—We are all…
Sisters.
